A Look at a Possible James van Riemsdyk Trade

Rumour: Chris Johnston for North Star Bets takes a look at possible sellers at the upcoming trade deadline. He says the Flyers are trapped between a rock and a hard place in the standings. Too good to be really bad and too bad to be good. Philadelphia general manager Chuck Fletcher also doesn’t have a lot of pieces to sell at the deadline.

One person that could draw interest is the 33-year-old winger. He’s had seasons where he’s scored 30 goals, but he’s also struggled on the defensive end. This could be one thing that makes general managers nervous about acquiring the New Jersey native.

What a James van Riemsdyk Trade Means

The veteran is in the last year of his contract that makes $7 million per season. He could be a good rental piece for a team. However, that contract is a scary one. Fletcher could retain some of the salary to make a trade more attractive.

Philadelphia has also gotten some trade interest for other players like Ivan Provorov. There are other unrestricted free agents like Patrick Brown and Justin Braun. However, there are also restricted free agents like Cam York and Noah Cates. The Flyers may not have much to offer, but van Riemsdyk might get a look at the deadline.
