The entirety of Hockey Canada’s board of directors has stepped down effective immediately, amid the controversy involving the organization. It was also announced that Scott Smith, the Chief Executive Officer of Hockey Canada, has also stepped down.

Hockey Canada has been dealt another massive blow, as the entirety of the board of directors has stepped down. This comes after Bauer, the supplier of equipment for Hockey Canada, announced that they will be pausing their sponsorship.

They have been in deep trouble recently, as former head Andrea Skinner tried to defend the organization’s actions. Because of this, more and more sponsors have pulled away from Hockey Canada. Some of these include Telus, Nike, Canadian Tire, Tim Horton’s, and as mentioned earlier, Bauer.

It even went to the point where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke out against them, pitching the idea of creating a new Hockey Canada from the ground up.

What This Means

Although it is a major step, there is still a long way to go until Hockey Canada can justify itself again. The public is extremely upset with them for the allegations, and how they handled the backlash.

It is going to take a lot of time to rebuild the trust between Hockey Canada and its sponsors. They destroyed their connections with a lot of major Canadian companies. The question of if those relationships can ever be saved is hard to answer right now, but new leadership may bring more positive communication.

With the organization being a massive mess, a change of leadership was needed. Whether Hockey Canada will ever be the same is unknown, but for now, the focus is on rebuilding the trust that they lost and settling the ongoing sexual assault cases that they have against them.
