A new hockey season is upon us, and one team, in particular, to watch out for is the Toronto Maple Leafs. Everyone is already talking about Auston Matthews’ next deal and the fact that Kyle Dubas won’t receive an extension. But today’s rumours involve a defenseman. Arizona Coyotes Jakob Chychrun could be involved in a trade, and a new team has emerged.

It is not surprising seeing Chychrun in trade rumours. He has wanted out of Arizona for quite some time. At some point, he may get his wish. The Leafs being in on Chychrun is something. An already good team could look to get better, and with them aiming to get over the playoff hump, adding a guy like him could help with that. Being on a player is great, but can it work?
How This Impacts Toronto
Everyone knows how lethal the offence can be. Goal scoring is not a problem for this team. A forward group highlighted by Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares, William Nylander, and Michael Bunting is a fun group to join. On the back end things are looking good, but why not make it better? Chychrun would be a great fit for the Maple Leafs. Despite having a down year for the Coyotes, he finished with 41 points the year prior. He is another defenceman that could slot in on the powerplay and in the top four. For a team with Stanley Cup aspirations, he would be a boost to the lineup and make the back end deeper. The team already has Morgan Reilly, Mark Giordano, and Jake Muzzin.
This Can Work – Or Not
Arizona Coyotes Jakob Chychrun could get traded to the Leafs. But this is where it gets tricky. Currently, the Maple Leafs are $2 million dollars over the cap limit. The nice thing about everything is that Chychrun currently has a cap hit of $4.6 million per year. He is under contract for three more seasons, making any deal for him worth it in the long run. The asking price is steep, but moving the right pieces for him would be worth it. But Kyle Dubas has his work cut out for him.
