Report: Philadelphia Flyers Parting Ways with Head Coach Mike Yeo

The Philadelphia Flyers have reportedly parted ways with interim head coach Mike Yeo. This is per Kevin Weekes. Weekes reports this from the booths at the first-round series between the St Louis Blues and the Minnesota Wild; ironically, two teams that have parted with Yeo in the past.

Flyers Parting Ways with Head Coach Mike Yeo

Former assistant coach, Mike Yeo, was made the interim coach mid-season when the Flyers fired head coach Alain Vigneault in December. Under Yeo, the team had a record of 17-36-7 and finished the season in last place in the Metropolitan division.

Over his 11-year NHL career as both head coach and assistant coach, Yeo has been a head coach over the St Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild, as well as the partial season with the Philadelphia Flyers. Between his time with the Blues and the Wild, Yeo’s record was 246-181-55. The Minnesota head coach took the Wild to the playoffs three out of the four full seasons he coached them; although never reaching the Stanley Cup Final. In his time with St Louis, he only had one full season with the team, which resulted in missing the playoffs. In 2018, after a very disappointing start, he was fired mid-season. The Blues would go on to win the Stanley Cup with an interim coach, Craig Berube.

Where To From Here

With the mid-season loss of the Flyers captain Claude Giroux, and being on the hunt for a new head coach, the organization will likely be looking for a massive rebuild before the start of next season. Though it is unclear if they will re-hire Yeo in a different capacity, they did fill his previous assistant coach position when he was moved to the interim coach. The Flyers are the third team to announce they will be looking for a new coach, along with the Detriot Red Wings and the Winnipeg Jets.
