Yegor Sharangovich Re-Signs With New Jersey

The Devils continue to have an active off-season by signing another restricted free agent. This time it is Yegor Sharangovich. Sharangovich burst on the scene for the Devils this season. He was one of the few bright spots for the Devils as they missed the playoffs once again. The Devils selected Sharangovich in the fifth round, 141st overall in the 2018 NHL Draft. He stayed over in Russia before coming over to the Devils organization. With the NHL not starting until January, Sharangovich had a leg up on his fellow teammates, that is why his transition was so smooth to the NHL. Prior to coming to the Devils, Sharagovich recorded 25 points (17 goals and eight assists) with HC Dinamo Minsk of the KHL. Sharangovich was exactly what the Devils needed.

In his second game in the NHL, Sharangovich recorded his first NHL goal, which was the overtime winner. Even though he had some ups and downs during the season as the rest of the league caught up to him, Sharangovich still put together a solid rookie campaign with the Devils finding his role in Lindy Ruff‘s system. He finished with 30 points (16 goals and 14 assists) in 56 games finishing 10th in the Calder Trophy voting for rookie of the year. He along with Ty Smith and Janne Kuokkanen finished inside the top 10 in rookie scoring. It was the first time the Devils had three players finish inside the top 10 in rookie scoring in a season.

Going Forward

Entering the season, there was a case to be made not to protect the player from the Seattle expansion draft. However, now after the season, he has had, there is no reason not to protect this player as he is a part of the team’s future. They have found a scoring winger that will consistently hit 20-goals a season. Considering he got 16 goals in 56 games, that projects to about 20-25 in 82 games. The Devils future is bright and Sharangovich will be a part of it alongside Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier.
