Philadelphia Flyers Shayne Gostisbehere Suspended

Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Shayne Gostisbehere has been penalized for boarding Mark Friedman of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 28-year-old blueliner has been suspended for his actions in the recent contest. Ghostisbehere will miss two games.

Flyers Shayne Gostisbehere Suspended

Gostisbehere has had himself a nice bounce-back season in 2020-21. He has posted nine goals and 20 points in 40 games. That represents a significant boost both in raw and per-game production compared to 2019-20. His possession numbers have dropped, but a 51.9 percent Corsi For is still acceptable. He is a nice complementary piece for Philadelphia if he remains with the team beyond this year.

The Flyers originally drafted Gostisbehere in the third round of the 2012 Draft, but his first significant action wasn’t until 2015-16. That is the year that the Florida native finished second in Calder voting thanks to 17 goals and 46 points in 64 games. Gostisbehere also has a season with more than 60 points, but his production has fluctuated over the course of his career. Overall, he has appeared in 380 games with 60 goals and 219 points. It has been a good career, but it is frustrating to see a talented player play so inconsistently.

How The Flyers Replace Gostisbehere

This penalty seems awkward after the league’s Safety Department failed to adequately address Tom Wilson, but it still shows they will penalize someone who isn’t a marquee star. Look for one of the team’s taxi squad defenders in the next game as Gostisbehere’s immediate replacement. Nate Prosser is the most likely option. The 6’2″ veteran has one goal and two points in six games at the NHL level this year. He also has one goal and 10 points in 59 games. Prosser is not a long-term solution, but he is adequate. Philadelphia will not make the playoffs in 2020-21, so this suspension means very little as the season winds down.
