Chicago Blackhawks’ up and coming defenceman Adam Boqvist injured his wrist during the game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night. Upon further analysis, it was discovered it was broken. Head coach Jeremy Colliton announced he was out for the season later that night.

Adam Boqvist Injured Wrist, Out For the Season

This was the right-handed defenceman’s second season in the league. After an up and down rookie year, Boqvist came back trying to prove his consistency. He is offensively gifted, but his defensive gameplay has looked much improved since last year. Over 34 games, he’s put up just shy of a point every two games – 15 points split between two goals and 13 assists.

He’s averaging a minute more of ice time per game, and is on pace to attempt the same number of shots as last season. His Corsi numbers are climbing too – a 49.8 percent Corsi For, and a Relative Corsi of 1.5. Both of those metrics are higher than his rookie season. Over his two-year career with the Blackhawks, Boqvist has played 75 games, scoring six goals and adding on 22 assists, totaling 28 points.

Moving Forward

The Blackhawks are going to miss having their young defenceman on the blue line. While they have a plethora of talented prospects and NHL starters, Boqvist is one of the brighter spots. He’s also the one with the most experienced of the young defencemen, so having him for a potential playoff push was crucial.

However, it looks like the Blackhawks are going to miss the playoffs. With the Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes, and Florida Panthers locking in their spots, there’s only one position left for grabs. To make matters worse, the Nashville Predators are red hot right now, and have beaten the Blackhawks multiple times in the last month. Having Adam Boqvist out with a broken wrist is only going to slow the Blackhawks down.
