Hockey is finally back! Normally we’d be closing in on the mid-way point of the regular season, however, we’re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date’s historical significance to the game. We’ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here’s our look at this date in hockey history for January 31st featuring Pat Quinn.

Pat Quinn Gets 600th Coaching Win
2004: The Toronto Maple Leafs coach picks up his 600th coaching win in the Leafs 5-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators. Quinn is the sixth coach to win 600 games in NHL history. He finishes his career with 684 victories and 300 of those are with Toronto.
The Hamilton, Ontario native also won the 2002 Olympic gold medal and 2004 World Cup of Hockey for Team Canada. He passes away in Nov. 2014 and enters the Hall of Fame the same year.

1920: Quebec Bulldogs forward Joe Malone scores a still league record seven goals in a 10-6 win over the Toronto St. Patricks.
1928: Ottawa goalie Alec Connell starts his run of six straight shutouts in a 4-0 victory over Toronto. It’s the 42nd career shutout for Connell.
1987: Dave Newell becomes the fourth referee in NHL history to officiate 1,000 games. He oversees the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 win over the Maple Leafs.
2000: Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Tom Barrasso becomes the 11th goalie to win 350 games in net. The Penguins beat the Atlanta Thrashers, 2-1, in overtime. Barrasso set a team record for saves in a home game one year earlier with a 51-stop effort versus Detroit.
2001: Mats Sundin is the 10th player to get 500 points with the Maple Leafs. Toronto gets a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
2006: Carolina forward Erik Cole gets three goals and an assist as they beat the Montreal Canadiens, 8-2. The win is Carolina’s 13th for the month, which hadn’t been done before in January. The Hurricanes are the sixth team to win 13 games in a month.
2016: The new All-Star Game format debuts when divisions play each other in 3-on-3 play. John Scott helps the Pacific Division win the crown after beat the host Central and Atlantic Divisions. Scott is voted in thanks to a fan campaign and scores twice in the 9-6 semifinal win.
2019: New York Rangers centre Mika Zibanejad scores three goals for his second NHL hat trick. The Rangers beat the New Jersey Devils, 4-3, thanks to Zibanejad’s fourth game-winner in five games.
