John Marino Signs Contract Extension With the Pittsburgh Penguins

John Marino

The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed defenceman John Marino to a six-year contract extension worth $26.4 million, or $4.4 million per season. The deal begins with the 2021-22 season and ends in the 2026-27 season. Marino has one year left on his entry-level deal.

John Marino Inks Extension with Pittsburgh

Marino was traded from the Edmonton Oilers to Pittsburgh in July 2019 in exchange for a conditional 2021 sixth-round draft pick. Edmonton took him in the sixth round, 154th overall of the 2015 NHL Draft. During the 2018-19 season, he was playing collegiate hockey with Harvard University of the ECAC Conference.

Over his one-year NHL career, Marino has only played for the Penguins. During his rookie season, he put up six goals and 20 assists for 26 career points in 56 career games. He put up one assist in four games during the qualifying round.

What This Means for the Future

Marino’s rookie season was one of the best in team history. He ranked second among team defencemen for goal, assist and point totals. His 26-points season was fourth-best among rookie defenceman, behind Quinn Hughes, Adam Fox, and the Calder Trophy winner, Cale Makar. Pittsburgh has only seven defencemen to ever achieve 20 assists and 26 points and he is one of them. The young player has proven he is NHL worthy.

Marino has a great defensive play and Pittsburgh can develop his offensive skills as well. He’s strong, fast, and young, which means he can improve even more. Marino is someone that can be a fixture in the top four of the defence for years to come.

Penguins general manager and executive vice president, Jim Rutherford, seems optimistic about Marino’s skills and future. Rutherford said Pittsburgh was impressed by his strong defensive play and will develop him offensively as the seasons go by in a press statement.
