The trade was announced today via Twitter. Coburn and Paquette are unrestricted free agents after 2020-21. Tampa Bay has announced both Gaborik and Nilsson will be placed on LTIR and will not play this season. With this trade, Tampa Bay is now cap compliant.

Braydon Coburn

Coburn is a veteran and played 40 games with Tampa Bay last season, scoring a goal and three assists in a 14:03 minute average per game. During the playoffs, the defenceman played in only three games and will likely add depth to the Ottawa roster.

Over his 15-year NHL career, Coburn has played for the former Atlanta Thrashers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Tampa Bay Lightning. In that time, he has 49 goals, 183 assists for 232 points in 964 career games. The defenceman was drafted in the first round, eighth overall of the 2003 NHL Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers.

Cedric Paquette

The 27-year-old player is a bottom-six centre and his physicality is one of his biggest highlights. He scored 18 regular-season points and three assists during the playoffs, being an active member of the Stanley Cup Champions roster during the bubble.

Paquette was drafted in the fourth round, 101st overall of the 2012 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Over his seven-year career, the forward has 47 goals, 38 assists for 85 points in 377 career games, all with Tampa Bay.

What This Means for the Future

Coburn and Paquette are likely Taxi Squad members for Ottawa this season. Both players are veterans and can add depth to the Senators’ game whenever they are needed. It is a smart move for the Candian team since they picked up two players they can use in exchange for two they couldn’t. In addition to the Coburn and Paquette move, the Senators also acquired Derek Stepan late on Saturday night.
