Carolina Hurricanes Re-Sign Warren Foegele

Warren Foegele has signed a new contract with the Carolina Hurricanes. He had filed for arbitration, but that is resolved in advance of the 2020-21 season. The deal is a one-year deal worth $2.15 million. The Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell announced the deal on Sunday evening on November 1st.

Hurricanes Re-Sign Warren Foegele

The 6’2″ Foegele had a breakout 2019-20. He scored a career-best 13 goals and 30 points in 68 games despite averaging just 13:43 per game. The season started a little slow, but he surged in December with four goals and 10 points in 13 games. A chunk of that was due to three shorthanded goals. The leaders in that category only scored four, so Foegele was not far off a league-leading pace with the strong end to 2019. He also had a very good 54.3 percent Corsi For, reflecting a strong possession skater.

The Hurricanes originally drafted Foegele in the third round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He played in two contests in 2017-18 but didn’t see considerable action until 2018-19. That is a year that saw the Markham, Ontario product post 10 goals and 15 points in 77 games. Overall, he has 25 goals and 48 points in 147 games. It is hard to imagine a much better season than 2019-20, but Foegele has shown he can produce in bursts despite Carolina’s depth.

What This Means for the Future

The team is deep enough that Foegele will start the year on the bottom-six, but that isn’t a negative situation for the 24-year-old. Both his traditional and advanced stats point to someone capable of controlling play at a high level. That in spite of roughly even deployment between offensive and defensive zone starts and almost no time on the power play. His contract is also friendly enough to not seriously impact future signings, but Carolina will have to make some decisions after 2020-21 about veteran skaters like Ryan Dzingel. Foegele could position himself for a top-six role in 2021-22 if the coming year goes well.
