We’re normally starting up another hockey season, but we’re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date’s historical significance to the game. We’ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here’s our look at this date in hockey history for October 31st, featuring Matthew Tkachuk.

Matthew Tkachuk Scores Between the Legs
2019: The Calgary Flames forward scores a treat of a goal with 1.6 seconds left in overtime. His wonder goal leads Calgary to a 6-5 overtime rally over the Nashville Predators. He scores the game-tying goal to force the overtime period.
The Flames trailed 4-1 in the third and 5-4 in the third period. He’s the second Flames player to score the game-tying goal in the last minute of regulation and game-winning goals in overtime. Eddy Beers first recorded the feat in Oct. 1983.
Other Notable Events
1942: Maurice Richard makes his NHL debut with the Montreal Canadiens. He gets an assist in a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins.
1981: Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers gets his seventh career hat trick before his 21st birthday. He gets four goals in an 11-4 win over the Quebec Nordiques. The Great One gets his 46th career hat trick and three assists in an 8-4 Los Angeles Kings win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
1987: New York Rangers forward Marcel Dionne scores his 700th goal in an 8-2 loss to the New York Islanders. Dionne spent the bulk of his career with the Kings.
1995: Montreal coach Mario Tremblay sets a record for the best start for a new coach. The Habs beat the Bruins, 3-1, for Tremblay’s sixth straight win.
2003: The Vancouver Canucks are the second team to score a goal in each of their first 11 games. Trevor Linden scores the opening goal of a 4-1 road win over the Phoenix Coyotes.
2007: Chicago Blackhawks rookie centre Jonathan Toews gets a goal in a 5-4 win over the Dallas Stars. Toews has points his first 10 games of his career at this point, which is the second-longest in NHL history.
2008: Mattias Ohlund scores in the 13th round of the shootout to give Vancouver a 7-6 victory against the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center. Each team scores six goals in regulation, but the shooting touch goes away in the overtime and shootout. Ohlund is the 26th shooter and ends it after finally beating Ducks’ goalie Jonas Hiller.
