The Colorado Avalanche have re-signed forward Tyson Jost. The Avs have not been one of the more active teams at the start of free agency but that could be changing soon. The deal is for one year with a cap hit of $874,125.

Colorado Avalanche Re-Sign Tyson Jost
Jost turned in another fine if unspectacular season in 2019-20. The young forward contributed eight goals and 23 points in 67 games along with a slightly above-average 51.6 percent Corsi For. This could have been a big year for the former first-round pick in his fourth season but Colorado chose to trade and sign other reinforcements. That pushed Jost down the depth chart to the third line. He has flashed promise with three straight seasons of more than 20 points. He just hasn’t put everything together the way many think he can. The pandemic certainly didn’t help things. Jost might have set a new career-high in points if things hadn’t shut down.
The Avalanche originally selected Jost tenth overall in the 2016 Draft and saw him debut for six games in 2016-17. The first few seasons haven’t gone according to play but the 5’11” forward still has only 208 regular season games to his credit. He also seemed to find his stride with the puck considering 2019-20 saw the best possession metrics of his career. The team just might need a little shuffling. An adjustment to the lines might increase his scoring from .35 points per game to .5 or higher.
What This Means for the Future
Jost is an important part of a talented and deep team. That won’t change. What will change is how the team views his role moving into his age-22 season. Another subpar start might turn Jost from critical middle-six skater into a valuable trade chip. His age, cost and overall ability might fetch a solid return if the team chooses to move in a different direction.
