Blue Jackets Extend Max Domi
Domi was acquired by the Blue Jackets in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens on October 6th. In return, the Montreal received forward Josh Anderson and a third-round pick in the 2020 draft. While with the Canadiens he impressed instantly recording new career highs in goals (28), assists (44) and points (72). Over his two years with the Canadiens, Domi has recorded 45 goals and 71 assists for 116 points in 153 games.
Over his career, Domi has scored 81 goals and added 170 assists for 251 points in 375 games.
Max Domi was originally drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the first round, 12th overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
What This Means for the Future
Despite the rumours, that the Canadiens would elect to keep Domi with the club, he was dealt on draft day. Domi had become one of the faces of the Canadiens offence and certainly proved his abilities in his first season with the club. Despite the dip in production during his second season, Domi proved still to be a very valuable member of the offence bringing fire and edge to his game. He’s an exceptional player maker with great speed and has shown the ability to be able to score goals by his 28 he scored in the 2018-19 season.
Domi is also a very versatile player capable of playing centre or the wing. Domi will likely be the second-line centre in Columbus. Now, Domi will have a new coach in John Tortorella. He knows he has a versatile player that he can move around the lineup as needed. Perhaps he will have a better relationship with his new head coach, as at times he and Claude Julien didn’t see eye-to-eye. That was mostly due to Domi’s insistence to play at center ice. In Columbus, he should get that wish to come true.
Since day one, Domi has expressed his love for the Canadiens and the city of Montreal. His father Tie Domi, who was a legend of the Toronto Maple Leafs had also bought into the organization despite the rivalry between the two clubs. Domi had become a fan favourite in Montreal. Fans will certainly miss him. Now, both he and Anderson will get a new start with new teammates and new challenges.
