We’ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here’s our look at this date in hockey history for September 10th, featuring Lou Lamoriello.

Lou Lamoriello Becomes Devils GM

1987: The New Jersey Devils name Lamoriello the team’s president and general manager. His background is in college hockey as a coach and athletic director at Providence College. Former GM Max McNab becomes an executive vice president.

Doug Carpenter stays on as head coach, but Lamoriello makes a big move five days later. He acquires Patrik Sundstrom from the Vancouver Canucks. Greg Adams and Kirk McLean come to the Canucks in return. Lamoriello helps the team win Stanley Cups in 1995, 2000 and 2003 and stays with the club until 2015.

Other Notable Events

1943: The Toronto Maple Leafs get the rights to 17-year-old Ted Kennedy from the Montreal Canadiens. Montreal gets the rights to Frank Eddolls in return. Kennedy helps the Leafs win the Stanley Cup in 1945, 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951. He enters the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966 and makes the top 100 players list in 2017.

1966: Joe Nieuwendyk is born on this date in Oshawa, Ontario. He is one of 10 players to win the Stanley Cup with three different teams. Nieuwendyk joins the Calgary Flames in 1986-87 after three seasons at Cornell University of the NCAA. He scores 51 goals in the next two seasons to help the Flames win the Stanley Cup in 1989. The forward adds championships with the Dallas Stars in 1999 and Devils in 2003. He finishes his career with 1,126 points (564 goals, 562 assists) in 1,257 NHL games and is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.

1986: Serge Savard, Dave Keon and Leo Boivin all enter the Hall of Fame. William Hanley also enters this year’s class as a builder.

The New York Rangers sign free agent Lucien Deblois for a second stint. He plays three seasons in his second time around with the Blueshirts.

2003: The Phoenix Coyotes name Shane Doan as the team’s 15th captain in franchise history. He becomes the team’s franchise leader in goals (402) and points (972). Doan stays as team captain through the 2016-17 season as he retires on August 30, 2017.

Vancouver signs free-agent forward Magnus Arvedsson signs with the team. He played previously for the Ottawa Senators.
