The Vegas Golden Knights have signed goaltending prospect Logan Thompson to a two-year entry-level contract, the team announced today.

Logan Thompson Signs Entry-Level Deal

Thompson, an undrafted prospect, spent the previous season with the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL. The 23-year old posted an impressive .929 save percentage in just 32 games. He faces a long road ahead in the Vegas depth chart, sitting behind names such as Marc-Andre FleuryRobin LehnerGarret SparksDylan FergusonOscar Dansk, and Jiri Patera.

Thompson has prior experience with Vegas general manager Kelly McCrimmon. McCrimmon owned the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL. Thompson played for the team under McCrimmon’s ownership for four years. The team won the WHL championship in 2016.

What This Means for the Future

Looking to the future, Thompson could have an opening with the Golden Knights sooner rather than later. Goalies Robin Lehner and Garret Sparks will be free agents after this season. However, Thompson will likely be relegated for the AHL for the next little while. His game isn’t NHL ready, but if developed properly, could definitely get there someday. He’s an interesting piece for the Knights that could certainly pay off down the road. An undrafted goalie like this can turn out to be a real beacon for teams. Goaltenders are incredibly hard to scout and draft, so the likelihood of Thompson being a diamond-in-the-rough player for Vegas is definitely there.

The contract is not expected to start until the 2020-21 season. Thompson will not join the Golden Knights for 2020’s Return to Play plan, as he either wouldn’t be eligible nor would he be considered for a roster spot.
