New Jersey Devils Comic Captions for 2019-20

Kyle Palmieri

Kyle Palmieri was the Devils leading scorer with his 25 goals and 20 assists totalling 45 points. The former 26th overall selection of the Anaheim Ducks played just 198 games with the Ducks over five seasons before being traded to the Devils in June of 2015 for a second-round pick. The 5′-11″, 185 pounds forward was born in Smithtown, New York and grew up in Montvale, New Jersey has played in the NHL for 10 years gathering 175 goals and 163 assists in 561 career games.

He’s a strong contributor on the power play where he added 11 goals and seven assists this season. His shot is very accurate with a 16.1 percent success rate. His one weakness is in the faceoff circle where for some reason he’s an awful 33.3 percent winner of the draw in his career. Over the past five seasons with the Devils, he’s been a consistent scorer averaging 0.69 points a game.

Palmieri is signed through next season for an AAV salary of $4.65 million. His continued play may earn him a pay raise. He’s a solid player for the Devils.

Here’s our New Jersey Devils comic caption for Kyle Palmieri.

Nikita Gusev

Nikita Gusev was a well sought after player from Russia. The Vegas Golden Knights managed to sign him in April of 2019 to a one year contract but he never played a game for Vegas. Instead in July of 2019, they traded him to the Devils for a third-round pick in 2020 and a second-rounder in 2021. He had been a great player in the KHL where he accumulated 119 goals and 213 assists in 391 games.

Gusev agreed to a two-year $9 million contract with the New Jersey team. In his first season with the Devils, he was a good playmaker registering 13 goals and 31 assists for 44 points in 66 games. He added five power-play goals and 10 assists. The winger just turned 28-years-old and it will interesting to see if the Devils re-sign him before his contract expires after next season.

P.K. Subban

P.K. Subban fell off a cliff this season. After averaging 0.64 points per game with the Montreal Canadiens, and 0.62 points per game with the Nashville Predators, he only managed 0.26 points a game with the Devils. But, here’s the real kicker for New Jersey. They are paying him $9 million a year for that less than average production! He has two more seasons at that salary and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Devils unload him if possible.

Subban’s downward play is difficult to explain except that the Devils weren’t a very good team this season, finishing 14th in the Eastern Conference with just 68 points. Unless the Devils feel they are going to make some fantastic turnaround next season, they may attempt to trade Subban, but with his meagre statistics, it won’t be easy. Unloading his enormous salary will be a stumbling block as well.

The Devils may be stuck with Subban and will need to evaluate their options. He was a star player and an enthusiastic performer, but he just didn’t get the job done this year.

There’s always next year.
