CSKA Moscow Signs Nikolay Goldobin

Over his six-year NHL career Goldobin has played for the Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks. He has put up 19 goals and 27 assists for 46 career points in 125 career games. San Jose originally drafted him in the first round, 27th overall of the 2014 NHL Draft.

He only appeared in one game in the 2019-20 season for the Canucks and didn’t get any points. His best season with the club was 2018-19 when he had seven goals and 20 assists for 27 points in 63 games. His Corsi for was 50.3 with a relative Corsi of 2.9.

Goldobin spend most of the recent season with the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League. He logged 19 goals and 31 assists for 50 points in 63 games with the Canucks’ AHL affiliate.

The 24-year-old came to Vancouver as a part of trade that sent Jannik Hansen to San Jose in 2017. Vancouver put him on waivers before the start of the season, but cleared and was able to go to Utica.

What This Means for the Future

Rumblings of the young forward heading overseas were over two months in the making. Igor Eronko of Sports Express first speculated that Goldobin would be heading back to Russia.

Him going to back to the KHL isn’t the end of Goldobin being in the NHL. He did tell Rick Dhaliwal of TSN 1040 that he would love to return to North America at the end of his contract.

It makes sense for him to head over to Russia to try to get some more playing time. CSKA are one of the more high-profile teams and he should get plenty of chances to improve his situation when he becomes a free agent.
