During the NHL’s hiatus, we at the Last Word on Hockey are going to look back at each date’s historical significance to the game. We’ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here’s our look at this date in hockey history for March 25th, featuring Wayne Gretzky.

Wayne Gretzky Gets 200 Points
1982: The Great One is the first to reach the unthinkable 200-point mark in the Edmonton Oilers 7-2 rout over the Calgary Flames. Gretzky gets the 200th point on an assist for Pat Hughes.
He also assists on bodyguard Dave Semenko‘s goal, but that’s not all the records for Gretzky. No. 99 sets a record with two shorthanded goals in a span of 27 seconds. He would end up with 203 points by the end of the night. Gretzky finishes the season with 212 points.
Other Notable Events
1924: The Montreal Canadiens beat the Calgary Tigers, 3-0, in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final to win the title. Georges Vezina gets the shutout.
1943: Busher Jackson scores the first shorthanded goal in overtime as the Boston Bruins beat the Habs, 3-2, in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup semifinals.
1951: Alex Delvecchio debuts in a banner night for the Detroit Red Wings in a 5-0 win over the Canadiens. Terry Sawchuk gets his 11th shutout as the Wings are the first team to get 100 points in a season.
1962: Bobby Hull is the third player to get 50 goals in a season as the Chicago Blackhawks in a 4-1 win over the New York Rangers.
1972: Hull joins Gordie Howe as the only two players to get 600 goals in their careers. Chicago ties Boston, 5-5, as Gerry Cheevers extends his unbeaten run to 32 games. (24 wins and eight ties.)
1994: Brett Hull scores 50 goals for the fifth straight season as the St. Louis Blues beat the Dallas Stars, 5-3. Hull would score three times to complete his 21st hat trick.
1995: Scotty Bowman is the first coach to win 900 games as the Red Wings beat the Vancouver Canucks, 2-1.
2004: Roberto Luongo sets the mark for most saves in a season with 2,219 in the Florida Panthers 3-2 defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes by stopping 42 shots. He finished with 2,303
