The Sharks have completed a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning moving Barclay Goodrow for a first-round 2020 pick.
Key Players
Goodrow started his professional career in 2013 as a free agent signed to a tryout deal by the AHL’s Connecticut Whale. He didn’t stick but got enough attention that he earned a tryout with the Detroit Red Wings the following year. Eventually, he signed a three-year deal with San Jose late in the 2013-14 season.
He spent his first three years as a North-South winger and frequent “tweener” – going from the Sharks to their AHL affiliate. He was then moved to centre, and has found a home on the Sharks’ fourth line. This season he’s been moved up, getting more than 15 minutes of ice time per game. As a result, he has hit career highs of eight goals and 24 points in 62 games.
The 6′-2″ 215 pounds Goodrow has made himself more of a physical presence as well. He passed last season’s career-high of 125 hits in 25 fewer games and did the same in penalty minutes with 80 (PIM) so far this year.
What This Means for the Future
In Goodrow, the Tampa Bay Lightning get someone best described as an old-school, “honest” player. He’s earned the extra ice time, improving his possession game and being responsible in all zones. Even in this disastrous year for San Jose, he has maintained a Corsi above 50% with a 52.0 mark. He’s was the Sharks primary penalty-killing forward on the league’s most effective unit, so expect him to be used there.
Goodrow’s new team gets some certainty, too, as he is signed for another year at a very reasonable $925,000 cap hit. Though he did have some injury trouble early in his career, he has played every game since the start of the 2018-19 season. That durability and his defensive responsibility make him a solid acquisition not only for the upcoming playoffs but beyond.
