Montreal Canadiens Trade Matthew Peca to the Ottawa Senators

The Montreal Canadiens have traded forward Matthew Peca to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for forward Aaron Luchuk and a seventh-round pick in 2020.

Matthew Peca Headed to the Ottawa Senators

Peca originally signed with the Montreal Canadiens on July 1st of 2018 to a two-year deal worth $2.6 million. He appeared in a total of 44 games for the Canadiens, registering three goals and six assists for 10 points. All 10 points came in the 2018-19 season as he never registered a point in five games this season.

Peca was originally drafted in the seventh round, 201st overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

In return for Peca, the Canadiens received Aaron Luchuk. Luchuk has spent most of the season with the ECHL Newfoundland Growlers, where he scored 19 goals and 31 assists for 50 points in 45 games. He played three games in the AHL this season with the Toronto Marlies, however, failed to register a point.

What This Means for the Future

The trade is a minor move for both teams however, Ottawa receives a player with some NHL experience. Peca has played in a total of 64 NHL games between the Canadiens and the Tampa Bay Lightning. For a rebuilding team like the Senators, he could be an everyday player. He plays a solid two-way game and possesses strong playmaking abilities. However, he lacks size. Peca certainly works hard enough and can factor in as a depth player for the Senators organization.

With the seventh-round pick, the Canadiens now hold the most picks in the upcoming 2020 NHL Entry Draft, which is being held in Montreal. Bergevin will either be making a lot of trips to the podium or will be looking at using these picks as trade chips to better his team for next season.
