Timashov is currently playing in his first season at the NHL level. In 39 games for the Leafs this season, Timashov has scored four goals and five assists for nine points. He has also recorded 16 penalty minutes.
The 23-year old has spent most of his professional career with the Leafs AHL affiliate Toronto Marlies. He recorded 38 goals and 69 assists for 107 points in 202 games.
Timashov was originally drafted in the fifth round, 125th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
What This Means for the Future
According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Timashov asked to be traded by the Leafs, hence being placed on waivers. Given the depth on the Leafs up front, Timashov wanted a fresh start elsewhere. Where better to go than the bottom-feeding Detroit Red Wings? Timashov has a legitimate chance to jump into the top six there. Much like Robby Fabbri did when he was dealt there from the St. Louis Blues. Even if he does not jump into the top six, he will at the very least be an everyday player. Something he struggled to accomplish with the Leafs.
Timashov is a very creative player, with outstanding vision and puck skills. However, he lacks in other departments such as his defensive play and skating abilities. However, he is still young and still has time to develop this aspect of his game. Getting a chance to be an everyday player with the Red Wings is the first step in accomplishing these goals.
The Red Wings’ next game comes on Tuesday night where they will host the New Jersey Devils.
