Derek Ryan Put on IR
Flames beat reporter Kristen Anderson said that there’s been a bug going around the team locker room. Ryan has been sick with this particular bug as he missed Saturday’s game and Sunday’s practice. Anderson also added that Mikael Backlund is feeling effects of illness as well.
So far this season, Ryan has scored 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points in 59 games. He’s also added 10 penalty minutes. His possession numbers are 49.2 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -1.1.
Over his five-year NHL career, Ryan has played for the Carolina Hurricanes and Calgary Flames. He has 51 goals and 84 assists for 135 career points in 293 career games. The Spokane, Wash. native was signed as an undrafted free agent after tearing up the Swedish Hockey League Orebro HK.
Ryan signed with Calgary prior to the 2018-19 season to reunite with then head coach Bill Peters. The 33-year-old netted a career-high 15 goals with the 2017-18 with the Hurricanes.
What This Means for the Future
Ryan has taken the long way to become a solid NHL player after playing in major junior, Canadian university, Sweden and the AHL before becoming a key piece for his team.
The veteran has become one of Calgary’s best two-way forwards and a go-to player for them. He works hard at both ends of the ice and has carved out a place on the club. The Flames will have to find a way to replace his hard work on offence and defence.
Gawdin gets a well-deserved call up after scoring 15 goals and 42 points with the Heat. Ryan can return to the lineup Friday for Calgary’s game against the Boston Bruins.
