Toronto Maple Leafs Extend Pierre Engvall

Pierre Engvall

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed left-winger, Pierre Engvall, to a two-year contract extension worth $1.25 million per season. This contract carries him through the 2021-22 season.

Pierre Engvall Re-signs with Toronto

Engvall was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the seventh-round, 188th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. This is Engvall’s first NHL season. In 35 games so far, Engvall has scored a total of 14 points, seven goals and seven assists with six minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 52.4 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 1.

Deserving of the extension, Engvall has done well for himself in both the AHL and NHL. This season with the Marlies, he has played in 15 games recording seven goals and nine assists for a total of 16 points. He also recorded six minutes in penalties.

What This Means for the Future

Moving forward, It seems that Leafs General Manager Kyle Dubas has made another great move this season. Signing another good depth player after trading for Kyle Clifford and Jack Campbell from Los Angeles Kings.

So far Engvall has paid his dues. Since being drafted in 2014, Engvall has made a name for himself in the AHL. Scoring 56 points in 94 games with 65 minutes in penalties. This helped him earn his call up to the big club.

This is a very good deal for the Leafs, especially considering how few NHL games he has played. His entry-level contract wraps up at the end of the season, hence the extension. This gives the Leafs plenty of lee-way with Engvall as he still has some room to grow. If he continues to excel and do well, the Leafs got a great player at a very cheap price. If he does not pan out as anticipated, the Leafs can send him back to the AHL. Giving him more time to go and mature.
