Edmonton Oilers Matt Benning Placed on Injured Reserve

Matt Benning

The Edmonton Oilers have announced that they have placed defenceman Matt Benning on injured reserve. They have also activated Adam Larsson from LTIR as well as Brandon Manning from IR.

Matt Benning Out with Upper Body Injury

Benning sustained the injury in Tuesday night’s contest against the San Jose Sharks. Benning took a stick to the head from Evander Kane in the first period. He fell to the ice while trying to skate away after receiving the stick to the head. Kane did not receive a penalty on the play. Benning left the game and did not return.

It was announced that Benning had been placed in concussion protocol. He was later placed on injured reserve.

In 23 games this season, Benning has registered five assists to go along with 10 penalty minutes.

Benning was originally drafted in the sixth round, 175th overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

One out, Two Return for the Oilers

Benning’s injury will keep him out for at least the next three games. However, it could be more if he is, in fact, dealing with a serious concussion.

While losing Benning is a tough loss for the Oilers, they will welcome back both Brandon Manning and Adam Larsson as both were activated from IR. Manning has been out since November 12th after suffering a hand injury against the San Jose Sharks.

Larsson has been out since the season opener against the Vancouver Canucks where he sustained an ankle injury.

Larsson will draw into the lineup on Thursday night against the Los Angeles Kings and will play on the third pairing alongside Kris Russell. In his only appearance this season, Larsson failed to register a point.
