The St. Louis Blues completed a trade Wednesday evening with the Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings have acquired forward Robby Fabbri in exchange for forward Jacob de La Rose. The Blues announced the trade via their official Twitter account.

St. Louis Blues Trade Robby Fabbri

Fabbri wasn’t doing much this year while buried on the Blues’ depth chart. The 23-year-old had just one goal on seven shots in nine games. Additionally, he was averaging 9:42 of ice time per contest with very little power play work but did have a relatively decent 48.6 Corsi For percentage.

St. Louis will get Detroit’s de La Rose in return. The 2nd round pick is also 24-years-old and has been fine for the Red Wings. He had one goal and four points in 16 games. He had also chipped in 24 hits to lead all Detroit skaters. His Corsi For was worse than Fabbri’s but almost nobody on Detroit outside of their stars was doing much in terms of possession.

What This Means for the Future

Fabbri will have a much better chance to crack Detroit’s top-nine forwards. St. Louis’ depth and Fabbri’s injury history had pushed the former 1st round pick out of regular playing time but there the talent level in Detroit is much lower. That should give Fabbri the opportunity to play with some of the young Red Wings such as Dylan Larkin or Taro Hirose. He does have a 37-point season in his history, so if he can stay healthy he should be an effective two-way player with scoring and checking ability.

St. Louis doesn’t gain as much from acquiring de La Rose in return. While he was doing ok in Detroit, the Blues do not need another bottom-six forward unless Alexander Steen misses significant time due to injury. He left early in a game against the Edmonton Oilers. De La Rose’s primary value right now is a 13th or 14th forward that rotates into occasional games.
