Pittsburgh Penguins Patric Hornqvist and Alex Galchenyuk Out With Injuries

Patric Hornqvist

The injuries on the Pittsburgh Penguins are mounting. After losing Evgeni Malkin for the foreseeable future, the Penguins have suffered another couple of injuries. Wingers Patric Hornqvist and Alex Galchenyuk sustained injuries in their last game on Tuesday. They are listed as day-to-day, both missed the practice on Wednesday and may miss some time for Pittsburgh. UPDATE: Alex Galchenyuk has now been placed on the injured reserve and Adam Johnson has been recalled.

Penguins’ Patric Hornqvist and Galchenyuk Out

Galchenyuk was part of a trade sending Phil Kessel to the Arizona Coyotes in the summer. In his first three games of the regular season, the American winger collected two assists for two points. The former third overall draft choice in 2012 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadiens has registered 298 points in 493 games.

The veteran Hornqvist has suffered a lower-body injury in a game against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday. The injury possibly occurred on this play during the first period versus the Jets. In his three regular-season contests, the 32-year-old Swedish right-winger scored two goals for a total of two points.

What Does This Mean For The Penguins

The Penguins are already without their superstar forward and also Nick Bjugstad. Malkin could be out up to four to six weeks with his injury. Losing two important forwards like  Hornqvist and Galchenyuk is worrisome for Pittsburgh. Besides those injuries, forward Bryan Rust is still on IR. The Penguins play their next game at home versus the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday. Hornqvist will almost certainly miss this game. Galchenyuk will be out for a while if he has been placed on IR.

Hornqvist has been skating on the third line, while the 25-year-old Galchenyuk on the second line. In their last practice today, the Penguins displayed the fourth line of Juuso Riikola, Andrew Agozzino, and Chad Ruhwedel. Two of those three skaters are defensemen. Dominik Kahun should play on the second line, while Sam Lafferty should skate on the third line for the Penguins.
