The Minnesota Wild have extended defenceman Jared Spurgeon to a 7-year contract worth $53.025 million, or $7.575 million per season. This contract carries him through the 2026-27 season. The AAV of 7.575 is the biggest cap hit the Wild have ever signed.

Minnesota Wild Extend Jared Spurgeon
Over his 9-year NHL career, Jared Spurgeon has played exclusively for the Minnesota Wild. He has put up 70 goals and 178 assists for 248 career points in 591 career games. He was originally drafted in the 6th round, 156th overall of the 2008 NHL draft by the New York Islanders, but the Wild signed him as a free agent after the Islanders cut him.
Last season he scored 14 goals and 29 assists for 43 points. He also added 20 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 51.5 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 1.0.
Bill Guerin said to The Athletic “These are the type of people we want to play for the Minnesota Wild. Character is huge to me, and this guy epitomizes that and you just don’t let guys like that go.”
What This Means for the Future
The Wild have locked up Spurgeon for the next eight years (the last year of his current contract and the next seven of his extension). He is a core part of their defence and is an excellent player. Along with Ryan Suter and Mathew Dumba, the Wild have a good defensive core locked up for the foreseeable future.
Spurgeon has been an integral part of this Wild team and has been an excellent defenceman for his entire tenure with the Wild. He is one of their veteran players and has a presence that greatly benefits his team every time he steps on the ice.
