Detroit Red Wings Jacob de la Rose Hospitalized After Cardiac Episode

The Detroit Red Wings have announced that forward Jacob de la Rose is sidelined indefinitely with an accelerated heart rate. He stayed in New York overnight and will see a specialist in Detroit.

The training staff alerted Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill to the issue during the second period of their 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers. Trainers tried getting de la Rose’s heart rate down before the team took the ice for the third period, but could not do that.

The Swedish centre has three goals and six assists for nine points in 60 games this season. He also has 16 penalty minutes. His possession numbers are 43.6 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of -4.9.

The 23-year-old has played for the Montreal Canadiens and the Detroit Red Wings in his five-year NHL career. He has 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 career points in 179 career games. Montreal originally drafted de la Rose in the second round, 34th overall of the 2013 NHL Draft.

This isn’t the first time that de la Rose has experienced a cardiac episode. He left the final pre-season game of the season against the Ottawa Senators due to a heart issue.

“I can’t say it’s the exact same,” Blashill said after the game. “I know that was the issue he had there. Was it caused by the same reasons? Was it exactly the same? I can’t say. Both were, from my understanding, accelerated heart rates.”

What This Means for the Future

De la Rose got a chance to be the top-line centre for Detroit with Dylan Larkin being out of the lineup. He assisted on Andreas Athanasiou‘s goal in the second period. Normally, de la Rose has been playing on the bottom-six as a depth forward. He’s usually been the pivot on the third or fourth line.
