The NHL will be heading outdoors three times when the 2019-20 season kicks off. During the second intermission of the 2019 Winter Classic, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman laid out the dates for the 2020 Winter Classic, All-Star Weekend and the NHL Stadium Series.

NHL Outdoor Games And All-Star Weekend Dates Set

Heritage Classic

The NHL outdoor games will kick off starting October 26th when the Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets face off in the Heritage Classic. This will be the league’s fifth edition, and first since the 2016-17 season.

The history of the league’s Heritage Classic goes back to the 2003-2004 season. It was the first regular-season game to be played outdoors. The Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens faced off at Commonwealth Stadium.

Though this is their second appearance, the Jets will be looking for their first win at this event. They were defeated by the Oilers 3-0 in 2016. The Flames, however, have a chance to go 2-0 at the Heritage Classic. They defeated the Canadiens 4-0 in 2011.

The two teams will meet at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Winter Classic

The Dallas Stars will appear in their first outdoor game when they head to Cotton Bowl Stadium. This continues a tradition that began back in 2008 when the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres faced off at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The Stars will find out their opponent at a later date, however. They do know the date though, as the Winter Classic is held every New Year’s Day.

All-Star Weekend

The St. Louis Blues will be host to their third All-Star Game. Their previous two came in 1970 and 1988 at St. Louis Arena. However, this will be their first at Enterprise Arena.

All-Star Weekend will kick off on January 24th and go thru January 26th. As usual, the weekend will also include the skills competition, along with other events and activities.

Stadium Series

And to wrap up the NHL outdoor games lineup, the Colorado Avalanche will be hosts to their second Stadium Series game. The Avalanche lost their previous matchup to the Detroit Red Wings.

This will be the second time the NHL has had a regular-season outdoor game at a U.S. service academy. The first took place last season between the Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

However, Colorado’s opponent will be announced at a later date. They will hit the outdoor rink on February 15th.
