Detroit Red Wings Mike Green out 3-5 Weeks With Lower-Body Injury

Defenseman Mike Green will miss 3-5 weeks after suffering a lower-body injury on Monday. The Detroit Red Wings have recalled Filip Hronek from the AHL

The Red Wings confirmed Friday that defenseman Mike Green will be out 3-5 weeks with a lower-body injury. The club has recalled Filip Hronek from the AHL to replace Green during his absence.

Red Wings Mike Green Injured

Green is facing a long-term absence after sustaining a lower-body injury that occurred Monday night in a contest against the Los Angeles Kings. The veteran defenseman did skate in the game against the Washington Capitals the following evening. However, he spent significantly less time on the ice than his usual 15:46 minutes. Green ultimately missed practice Thursday and was previously listed as day-to-day.

This is the second injury to sideline Green for a significant amount of time this season. He previously missed some parts of training camp and the first nine games of the season. He contracted a virus and had a hard time rebounding from it. As well, Green suffered a neck injury. This required surgery for repair in April of last year that ended his season early.

Green has tallied three goals and 13 assists for 16 points in 23 games this season. Throughout his 14 year NHL career, he has notched 145 goals and 335 assists for 480 points in 810 games.

What this means for the future

Detroit’s head coach Jeff Blashill confirmed Friday that Green is sidelined for at least three weeks with the injury. The team has recalled Filip Hronek from the Grand Rapids Griffins to fill Greens slot in the lineup. Hronek has been thriving in the AHL. He was drafted by the Red Wings in the second round of the 2016 NHL Draft. He owns five goals and 18 assists with the Griffins this season. The young defenseman has appeared in six NHL games with the Red Wings. Where he earned one goal and two assists for three points. Hronek will dress tonight for Detriots matchup against the Ottawa Senators.
