After false starts and reports that were denied by his agent earlier in the week, the Washington Capitals have signed Russian winger Sergei Shumakov to a one-year entry-level deal worth $950,000 plus $400,000 in potential bonuses. At the end of next season, Shumakov will be a restricted free agent. Shumakov recently parted ways with CSKA Moscow where he spent the last season.

Washington Capitals Sign Left Wing Sergei Shumakov

The 25-year-old Shumakov has spent the last seven years playing in the KHL for CSKA Moscow and Novosibirsk Sibir. He has scored 74 goals and 71 assists in 145 career KHL games. He has eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 50 Gagarin Cup Playoff games. Shamakov has also played in 14 career international games scoring three goals and five assists for eight points in those 14 games.

Last season he scored 17 goals and 23 assists for 40 points in 47 games with CSKA. He also added 42 minutes in penalties. He added two goals and two assists for four points in 11 Gagarin Cup games. Shamakov led the KHL in plus/minus with a +28.

What This Means for the Future

At 25 years he will bring youth to the Capitals and came at a cheap price. He is expected to be a middle-six forward for Washington. Over the past three seasons, he has put up at least 16 goals which included a 20-goal season during the 2015-16 season. It will be interesting to see how Shamakov adjusts to NHL play after spending his whole career in Russia up to this point. He was a top 20 scorer in the KHL last season and the Capitals hope that some of the offensive game will translate at the NHL level.
