The New York Islanders have re-signed centre Brock Nelson to a one-year contract worth $4.25 million. Nelson and the Islanders avoid arbitration, which was set for August. He is now scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent next summer.

New York Islanders Re-Sign RFA Brock Nelson
Nelson has spent his entire five-year NHL career with the New York Islanders. He has scored 99 goals and 88 assists for 188 career points in 398 career games. He was originally drafted in the first round, 30th overall by the New York Islanders in the 2010 NHL Draft.
Last season he scored 19 goals and 16 assists for 35 points in 82 games. He also added 43 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 45.5 percent Corsi with a relative Corsi of +2.7. His best year was in 2015-2016 when he scored 26 goals and 14 assists for 40 points in 81 games.
Nelson is coming off a three-year $7.5 million contract with an AAV of $2.5 million per year that he signed in September of 2015.
What This Means For the Future
The Islanders have re-signed their three-time 20 goal scorer. He has been in the top ten on the team in goals during his five years with the team. Three of those years he was in the top five. This year Nelson’s most common linemates were Joshua Ho-Sang and Anthony Beauvillier, whom he played alongside for 26.7% of his shifts. He has also been part of the Islanders power play with four power-play goals on the year. In 2014-15 half of his goals came on the power play.
Even though Nelson is listed at 6-foot-3 and 212 pounds he is not known for throwing his weight around. After having 99 hits during the 2015-16 season, he has only averaged 50 hits per year in the last three seasons. Nelson has the versatility to play both centre and on the wing, which is an asset for the Islanders going forward.
