Darryl Sutter Retires

During his 18-year coaching career, Sutter coached the Calgary Flames, Chicago Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks, and Los Angeles Kings. He finished with a record of 634-467-83 with 101 ties in 1,285 games coached. He went 89-81 in 14 seasons of coaching during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.  Sutter greatest accomplishment was leading the Kings to two Stanley Cup Championships in 2012 and 2014. He also led the Flames to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004 but the Flames lost in seven games to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Sutter spent eight seasons as a winger for the Chicago Blackhawks before becoming a coach. He spent his entire eight-year playing career with the Blackhawks. He scored 161 career goals and added 118 career assists for 279 career points in 406 NHL games. Sutter was originally drafted in the 11th round, 179th overall in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft. He is one of seven Sutter brothers to play in the NHL. Now a new generation of Sutters is making their way through the league, as many of their children have become NHL players.

What This Means for Sutter

After Barry Trotz resigned from the Washington Capitals some thought Sutter would be next in line to coach Washington. When Sutter was asked about the possibility of coaching the Capitals he said: “Forty years, that’s enough,”. Sutter also said, “No way, I’d be too far away from the grandkids” when asked about the Washington Job.

Sutter plans to enjoy his retirement from coaching on his farm in Viking, AB as he is up at the crack of dawn caring for his farm. He leaves the NHL with two Stanley Cups and lots of memories.
