The Edmonton Oilers have re-signed restricted free agent forward Drake Caggiula to a two-year contract worth $3 million, or $1.5 million per season AAV. This contract carries him through the 2019-20 season.

Drake Caggiula Re-signs With the Edmonton Oilers
Caggiula has only played for the Edmonton Oilers in his two-year career. He has put up 20 goals and 18 assists for 38 career points in 127 career games. He was signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of North Dakota. The Pickering, Ontario native was the 2016 NCAA tournament’s most outstanding player as he led the team to a national title.
Last season he scored 13 goals and seven assists for 20 points in 67 games. He also added 37 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 47.4 percent Corsi-for and a relative Corsi of -3.6. He missed 15 games due to a mouth injury and being a healthy scratch at times.
He is the first signing in Edmonton general manager Peter Chiarelli’s long list of restricted free agents this offseason. The Oilers have some decisions to make in regards to their forwards. Six Oilers who played in 40 games are eligible for new contracts.
What This Means for the Future
Caggiula struggled in sophomore season, but Chiarelli wasn’t going to let him go. He did score a career-high in goals but only managed seven assists in a mediocre campaign. However, his 13 goals were fourth on the team.
His advanced stats also suffered in Corsi and Fenwick as a bottom-six forward. He did get some looks on the top lines but was not able to advance too much from his rookie season.
However, Caggiula does play a feisty game as he registered 147 hits. He’s an opportunist that can dart in-and-out of situations and make plays. The former Fighting Hawk is also willing to stick his nose into any situation if needed.
