Kyle Dubas

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced that the team has promoted Kyle Dubas to general manger. Dubas served as the team’s assistant general manager since July 22, 2014. He served as an interim general manager from April-July 2015 after Dave Nonis was fired.

Maple Leafs Promote Kyle Dubas

The Maple Leafs promoted Dubas after the Leafs have improved over the last two seasons. This season, the team has a record of 49 wins and 26 losses and seven overtime losses for 105 points. The team set records for regular-season wins and points with those totals.

Toronto finished third in the Atlantic Division and made the post-season for second straight season. The Boston Bruins eliminated Toronto in seven games in the first round. It was the first back-to-back playoff appearances for the club since their run from 1999-2004.

Dubas served as general manager for the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. He was an assistant general manager under Nonis and Lou Lamoriello. He came over to the Leafs and is a protege of team president Brendan Shanahan.

Dubas becomes the 17th general manager in team history. The 32-year-old Dubas replaces Lamoriello, who will stay on as a senior advisor. Lamoriello will likely seek a general manager’s job with another team.

What This Means for the Team’s Future

Dubas’ modern approach is part of the Leafs recent form. He uses statistics and analysis in player evaluation. His stint in player personnel with a big success. Many of his former Marlies players play for the big club. He was 190-100-20-4 in his stint in charge of the AHL team.

The promotion for Dubas raises the question of what will become of Mark Hunter, an assistant GM who had reportedly been in the running for the promotion. Each has played a part in the team’s successful draft classes. His fate will be determined at a later date.
