Evgeni Malkin, Carl Hagelin and Brian Dumoulin All Uncertain for Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced that forwards Evgeni Malkin, Carl Hagelin and Brian Dumoulin are all game-time decisions for at least Game Three of their second-round series with the Washington Capitals with various injuries.

Malkin, Hagelin & Brian Dumoulin Uncertain

Malkin suffered a lower-body injury in Game Five of Pittsburgfirst-roundound series against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Russian centre missed Game Six against the Flyers.

Hagelin was injured after a high bodycheck from Claude Giroux in Game Six. The Swede left the game soon after with blood dripping from his face. Hagelin had scored in the game prior to his departure.

Dumoulin left in Game Two of the Washington series after taking a high hit from Tom Wilson. The Capitals forward did not receive supplemental discipline for the check.

So far this season, Malkin scored 42 goals and 56 assists for 98 points. He also added 87 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 53.2 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 1.4.

Over his 11-year NHL career, Malkin has played only for the Penguins. He has put up 370 goals and 560 assists for 930 career points in 784 career games. He was originally drafted in the first round, second overall of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

So far this season, Hagelin scored 10 goals and 21 assists for 31 points. He also added 28 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 53.9 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 2.2.

Over his seven-year NHL career, Hagelin has played for the New York Rangers, Anaheim Ducks and Pittsburgh Penguins. He has put up 88 goals and 134 assists for 222 career points in 488 career games. He was drafted in the sixth round, 168th overall of the 2007 NHL draft by the New York Rangers.

So far this season, Dumoulin scored five goals and 13 assists for 18 points. He also added 30 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 52.9 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 1.1.

Over his five-year NHL career, Dumoulin has played only for the Penguins. He has put up seven goals and 44 assists for 51 career points in 243 career games. The Carolina Hurricanes originally drafted him in the second round, 51st overall of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

All players participated in practice and Malkin and Hagelin could make their series debuts in Game Three.

What This Means for the Future

The Pens did manage to get a split in Washington, but would love to an excellent playmaker like Malkin back. Hagelin is a solid role player that hustles and Dumoulin eats up plenty of minutes on defense. The trio’s returns would be a welcome sight because this has the makings of a long series.
