According to a tweet from Sean Leahy, Tod Leiweke has been named the CEO and President of Seattle’s proposed NHL expansion team which is expected to join the NHL in 2020 season.

Tod Leiweke Named CEO of Seattle Expansion Team
According to a report from Sean Leahy of the Seattle Times, Tod Leiweke has been named CEO of the proposed Seattle NHL Expansion team. Leiweke worked as a COO in the NFL for three years before leaving his job in March. He was the number two guy behind NFL Commissioner Rodger Goodell. He also was the CEO of the Seattle Seahawks from 2003-2010. Before working with the NFL he was the CEO of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Tod’s brother Tim is currently the CEO of Oak View Group which is spearheading the renovations to KeyArena and the attempt to bring an NHL franchise to Seattle. This could be a start of the Leiweke family taking control of Seattle’s expansion team. The group is working on renovations of KeyArena to make the arena suitable to host an NHL team.
What Does This Mean for Seattle?
This move is the part of the steps in bringing an NHL franchise in Seattle. They still have multiple steps that need to make before this organization becomes official. They have already shown that Seattle can draw the fans in after they reached 25,000 tickets during their ticket drive earlier this year. Hopefully, they can have the same kind of effect to the town of Seattle that Vegas had in their first year in the NHL.
This is a smart move by Seattle by naming a CEO so early in the process and having someone with NHL experience at the head of the organization.
