The Washington Capitals announced on Friday night that the club has signed general manager Brian MacLellan to a contract extension. Details of the contract were not released, however many reports indicate that it is a multi-year extension.

Brian MacLellan Signed a Contract Extension with The Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals have signed general manager Brian MacLellan to an extension. This season, the Capitals are 37-23-7 and are currently in second place in the Metropolitan Division.

The Caps are 193-116-34 in his three-plus seasons as general manager. His most successful season was in 2015-2016 when the Capitals won the President’s trophy.

What This Means for the Future

Before being hired as general manager, MacLellan was the assistant general manager, working under George McPhee. When McPhee was fired after missing the playoffs in the 2013-14 season, MacLellan was promoted to run the club. He has been a part of the Capitals organization for 13 years before becoming general manager. In the three seasons as general manager, the Capitals have not missed the playoffs. In 2015-16 the Capitals ended up winning the President’s trophy. One thing the Capitals are still searching for is a Stanley Cup Championship. They have not made it past the second round of the playoffs since their lone Stanley Cup Final appearance in the 1997-98 season.

One of his main goals has been restructuring the defence after losing key pieces like Kevin Shattenkirk, Karl Alzner, and Nate Schmidt over the course of the off-season. Young defenders Christian Djoos and Madison Bowey joined the club this season. The Capitals have gotten continued to get younger on the blueline, acquiring defencemen Jakub Jerabek from the Montreal Canadiens, and Michal Kempny from the Chicago Blackhawks at the trade deadline.
