Chicago Blackhawks trade Michal Kempny to the Washington Capitals

The NHL Trade Deadline is a week away. The Washington Capitals and Chicago Blackhawks got one of their trades done early. The Blackhawks send defenceman Michal Kempny to the Capitals in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. The pick will be the higher of the two picks the Capitals currently own in the third round, their own and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Kempny, 27, has one goal and six assists for seven points in 31 games with the Blackhawks this season. He has also added 12 minutes in penalties. Kempny’s possession numbers are 53.9 percent Corsi, with relative Corsi of +1.4.

Kempny signed with the Blackhawks as an undrafted European free agent prior to the 2016-17 season. He has played two years with Chicago. In 81 career NHL games, he has three goals and 12 assists for 15 points. He played just one playoff game last year as the Hawks were swept in the first round by the Nashville Predators.

For the Capitals, they get a defensive defenceman who provides depth on their bottom pair, or in case of injuries. Meanwhile, this signals the start of a sell-off in Chicago, as the Blackhawks come to terms with their team being out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs this year. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
