Charlie McAvoy Injured
The Long Beach, New York native left in the opening minute of the first period of Saturday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens. McAvoy and Montreal forward Brendan Gallagher collided with each other. The Boston University product then hit his knee awkwardly into the boards.
So far this season, he scored seven goals and 25 assists for 32 points. He also added 49 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 54.7 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 2.1.
Over his first NHL season, McAvoy has played for just the Boston Bruins. He has put up seven goals and 25 assists for 32 career points in 59 career games. He was originally drafted in the 1st round, 14th overall of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins. McAvoy registered three assists in six playoff games last season.
“Charlie sustained a sprain of his left MCL and will be re-evaluated in four weeks. The injury occurred on March 3 in the first period of the Bruins game against the Montreal Canadiens at TD Garden,” a statement issued by team general manager Don Sweeney said.
What This Means for the Future
It’s another setback to the Bruins, who are chasing the Tampa Bay Lightning for the Atlantic Division title. Boston is already without Patrice Bergeron, who is out with a broken foot.
The Bruins enter Tuesday’s games with the second-best record in the Eastern Conference on 88 points. Tampa Bay possesses a conference-best 94 points and leads the division.
McAvoy has partnered alongside Zdeno Chara and been a regular contributor since having heart surgery in January.
He would be back by the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs on April 11 if all goes well.
