We’re one week away from the NHL trade deadline, so that means more NHL trade rumours. We’ll take a look at the St. Louis Blues looking at Max Pacioretty, the Vancouver Canucks making calls on Max Domi and Tobias Rieder and a pair of teams asking about Luke Glendening.
The Latest NHL Trade Rumours
Max Pacioretty
Rumour: It’s no secret that the St. Louis Blues are a going to be a buyer and try to keep up in a loaded Central Division. General manager Doug Armstrong is already putting in the work to land a big-time player and that may be Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty. Louis Jean of TVA said the Blues have asked the Habs about the American forward and are willing to part with either prospect Robert Thomas or Jordan Kyrou.
Analysis: A major issues that will hold back this deal is the St. Louis cap situation. The Blues have less than $2 million of projected space. St. Louis will have to move someone even if Montreal retains some of Pacioretty’s salary.
The Blues are all in and have already dealt their 2018 first-round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers. They will need to deal some valuable prospects to the Canadiens to land a prime player.
Max Domi and Tobias Rieder
Rumour: Sportsnet 630 and News 1130’s Rich Dhaliwal reports from a source that the Canucks have asked about Maxi Domi and Tobias Rieder from the Arizona Coyotes. The asking price is said to be very high.
Analysis: Domi’s name has been tossed around a bit during the weeks leading up to the deadline. Both he and Rieder have gone through some hard times, but Arizona would be hard-pressed to give them up. Vancouver general manager Jim Benning has made it a habit of rehabbing young wingers like Sven Baertschi and Markus Granlund.
Benning’s luck with young forwards is one of the reasons he was given an extension. Landing Domi and Rieder and would be a huge coup and kickstart the Canucks rebuild.
Luke Glendening
Rumour: Frank Seravalli of TSN reports that the Toronto Maple Leafs and Dallas Stars have asked about Detroit Red Wings forward Luke Glendening. Both teams would like to have a player that’s a solid penalty killer and checker.
Analysis: This is a contract that Red Wings general manager Ken Holland would love to get off the books. The contract was another one of Holland’s bad deal as it still has three years and $1.8 million per season left on it.
Glendening to the Leafs would make sense because he would reunite with former coach Mike Babcock. There’s no doubting Glendening’s work ethic and he’d be a boon in either the Dallas or Toronto locker room. Detroit would likely experiment with another young player to fill the spot.
