The Ottawa Senators announced today that they have extended goaltender Craig Anderson for two years. The deal is worth 9.5 million dollars, with an average cap hit of 4.75 million dollars. His contract also carries a 10 team no trade-clause. Anderson, 36, was scheduled to be a UFA July 1st 2018. The extension is no shock to any Sens fans, Anderson played amazing last year after returning to action from dealing with personal issues at home. He also looked great in the playoffs for the Senators. Anderson was a huge contributor to the Sens success in the playoffs.
Craig Anderson inks two-year deal with Ottawa Senators
Craig Anderson has had hair fair share of experience in the NHL. He was a third round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 1999 NHL draft. After that path didn’t work out for him, he re-entered the draft. He would again go in the third round, this time to the Chicago Blackhawks. He played with the Norfolk Admirals before playing with the Hawks for three years. In addition to playing for the Chicago Blackhawks, Anderson has played for the Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche and the Ottawa Senators. He has suited up for a total of 506 NHL games in his career. Anderson currently boasts a .916 save percentage over his career.
The contract makes sense for the Senators for a variety of reasons. It provides security in net and it’s not necessarily an expensive deal considering the workload he takes on. Not only has Craig Anderson been a solid starting goalie in the regular season, he’s an absolute beast in the playoffs. In his last four playoff appearances, Anderson’s save percentage is in the following order, .933, .933, .918, .972, .922. It’s safe to bet that if Craig Anderson is in goal for your team in the playoffs, the other team is going to have trouble putting pucks behind him. The Senators already were considered to have one of the best goaltending duo’s last year, with the re-signing of Mike Condon and now Craig Anderson, there is very little doubt of that now.
