The Vancouver Canucks announced Thursday night that they have re-signed depth center Michael Chaput. He inks a new one-year, one-way deal worth $687,500. The 25-year-old center was originally drafted in the third round 89th overall in 2010 by the Philadelphia Flyers. However, Chaput never played a game for the organization.
While he was still in development in the CHL, Chaput was moved to the Columbus Blue Jackets. He began his career with the team. He spent a total of three seasons with the Blue Jackets but only managed to put up six assists and two goals for eight points in 58 games. He’d spend the majority of those three seasons down in the AHL with Springfield and Lake Erie.

Vancouver Canucks Re-Sign Michael Chaput for One More Year
Chaput was on the move once again. This transaction came before the 2016-17 season where he was signed as a free agent by the Canucks. This time though, Chaput managed to play a 68 game season. In doing so put up four goals and five assists for nine points along with 29 penalty minutes. He also played just 10 games with the Utica Comets in the AHL, where he had two goals and 11 assists for 13 points.
He’s expected to play in the NHL again. He could be slotted anywhere on the third or fourth lines. Chaput has the durability to play either wing or center, but his main preference is playing down the middle. The best part about this deal is the fact the Canucks were able to sign him to such a small deal. If he doesn’t last on the roster the club can always try waivers, and bury him in the AHL without any money remaining on the cap.
Even if on the roster, such a small deal comes a very small cap hit. This allows Vancouver to keep depth while they go out and add more since they didn’t have to overspend. It’s definitely a very solid signing by the Canucks and Michael Chaput.
