Toronto Maple Leafs Re-Sign Zach Hyman

Hyman, 25, played his first full NHL season last year. In 82 games for Toronto last season he had 10 goals, 18 assists, and only 30 penalty minutes. He exhibited his ability to produce some offense in the bottom six while staying disciplined in his play. He also played in all six of the Stanley Cup Playoff games for the Leafs, scoring a single goal and adding three assists during the series against the Washington Capitals.

Before breaking onto the scene this year Hyman played for the University of Michigan. He was a mainstay with the Wolverines over the course of his four season with them, playing in 151 games for the program. During this time he scored 35 goals and added 54 assists to his point tally. Hyman also never had more than 12 penalty minutes in a season while at Michigan.

Toronto selected Hyman in the fifth round, with the 123rd overall selection, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He spent a single season with the Toronto Marlies in 2015-16, playing in 59 games. In those 59 games he was able to score 15 goals and add 22 assists to his point tally.

His season with the Marlies in the AHL was enough to see Hyman get 16 games with the Leafs. In those 16 games he scored four goals and had two assists to go with his 18 penalty minutes in that short season.

Another point to show the effectiveness of Hyman is the 1.58 Relative Corsi-For percentage that he carried last season. To put it into perspective, this was seventh best among all Leafs players that played 41-or-more games in 2016-17. It was also fourth among qualifying forwards on the Leafs roster; trailing only James van Riemsdyk (1.70), Brian Boyle (1.92), and William Nylander (2.75).
