The Montreal Canadiens have re-signed forward Alex Galchenyuk to a three year deal with an AAV of $4.9 million. Galchenyuk’s name was in the rumor mill for the longest time following Montreal’s first round playoff exit, but the team and player have shown they are committed to each other.

The 6’1″, 210 pound centerman was drafted by the Canadiens in the 2012 National Hockey League Entry Draft with the third overall pick. Galchenyuk immediately suited up for the team, skating in 48 games his rookie season. He scored nine goals and had 18 assists as well. Galchenyuk was a promising player: fast, skilled, and had a scoring touch. In his next four seasons with the Habs, he tallied 31, 46, 56, and 44 points. In his total career, Galchenyuk has played in 336 games, scoring 89 goals, and adding 115 helpers. He has 28 career playoff games under his belt over the course of four appearances, with four goals and nine assists in those games.

Despite his impressive contributions, Galchenyuk often struggled to stay consistent and to be a full-on offensive contributor. During the playoffs this past season, when Montreal took on the New York Rangers, Galchenyuk was limited to only three assists. Other than that, he was halted on offense and couldn’t give Montreal the offensive spark they needed to beat New York.

At the end of the day Galchenyuk is still one of the more dynamic offensive threats in the Montreal arsenal, and with proper deployment he could still transform his game into an elite offensive threat.
