David Desharnais Signs with the New York Rangers

The undersized centre men split last season between the Montreal Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers. The 30 year old old began the season with the Canadiens but after a lacklustre start that saw him record just 10 points in 30 games, Desharnais was shipped to Alberta. Going the other way in the trade was defensemen Brandon Davidson.

Once joining the Oilers for the second half of the season, Desharnais didn’t find much success. In 18 regular season games with the Oilers, he played bottom six minutes and only chipped in four points. Although Desharnais wasn’t a huge offensive contributor during the regular season, he did manage to play some solid hockey in 13 post season games. The solid play correlated into Desharnais notching four points and included an over time winner in Game 5 of the opening round against the San Jose Sharks.

Before the trade to the Oilers in late February, Desharnais spent his entire NHL with the Montreal Canadiens. After making the full time jump to the NHL for the 2010-2011 season, Desharnais managed to be a pretty solid offensive forward. However after a 48 point season 3 years ago, Desharnais offensive production slipped the following year and he has never been able to regain it. In 453 career games, Desharnais has netted 81 goals and recorded 173 assists for 254 points. Prior to playing in the NHL, he also spent time with the Hamilton Bulldogs and in the ECHL with the Cincinnati Cyclones. He signed with the Habs as an undrafted free agent from the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.

Desharnais’s last contract was a four-year, $14 million contract that came with a cap hit of $3.5 million per season.
