Vegas Golden Knights Trade Trevor Van Riemsdyk to Carolina Hurricanes

Not even 24 hours after being selected by the Vegas Golden Knights as their pick from the Chicago Blackhawks for the expansion draft, Trevor van Riemsdyk has been flipped to the Carolina Hurricanes.

There was widespread speculation that Chicago would be sending Marcus Kruger and his contract over (two years, $3.1 million AAV) as well, but that never materialized. The return for Vegas again is big for a defenseman with just two full seasons of NHL experience under his belt.

Brother of James van Riemsdyk, Trevor set career highs in goals (5) and points (16) despite playing 24 less games than 2015-16, suiting up for 58 this year. The last two seasons, he’s been an average possession player rounding out to 50% combined including 54.53 Corsi-against per 60. However, head coach Bill Peters has a knack for getting the most out of his group possession-wise, as the Hurricanes have placed sixth with a 51.81% Corsi-for percentage the last three seasons combined. He’s going to an ideal spot in this regard to develop his game as a soon-to-be 26-year old.

“TVR” has had a little bit of injury history. In his final college season with the University of New Hampshire, he suffered a fractured ankle. He made his debut in the NHL in 2014-15 with the Blackhawks, only to have it cut short to 18 games with a fractured patella and wrist injury. The Middletown, New Jersey native did come back for four games in the Stanley Cup Final, however, getting to lift the Cup as a rookie. This past season he was limited due to an upper-body setback. His health will be key if he is going to play a valuable role with the ‘Canes.

van Riemsdyk went un-drafted and signed with the Blackhawks as a free agent. He suited up in college for three seasons scoring 16 goals and 75 points in 102 total contests, topping out at eight goals and 33 points in his sophomore campaign. He will be heading into the final year of his two-year $1.65 million deal and will be a restricted free agent.
