Center Teuvo Teravainen signed a two-year, $5.7 million contract extension with the Carolina Hurricanes this morning. His contract will pay him $2.9 million per season and he will stay with the team until 2019. Teravainen spent the first three years of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Teuvo Teravainen Signs Two-Year Extension with Carolina Hurricanes
Teravainen was traded along with the contract of Brian Bickell last off-season to Carolina as a result of the latter’s cap hit. The trade allowed him to enjoy a bigger role in Carolina that would further his development. He was coming off of a career season with the Hawks, scoring 13 goals and 35 points building off of an impressive 2015 Playoff showing that saw his name get put on the Stanley Cup (four goals, 10 points in 18 games).
Teravainen had only one full season with Chicago in the Windy City, drafted 18th overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He departed Chicago as one of their blue chip young players that had to be an unfortunate salary cap casualty but saw almost a minute increase in ice time and proportional increase in power play time.
As a result, Teravainen set career highs across the board in goals (15), points (42), games played (81), power play goals (5), power play points (15), and Corsi-for percentage (54.9%). A center by trade, he played the majority of this season on the wing with budding rookie Sebastian Aho or Jordan Staal centering him, allowing him to further his offensive abilities on a team starving for some creativity up front.
In terms of contract history, this is Teravainen’s first standard contract after his entry-level deal, with a first-year slide, counted $894,167 against the cap for the last three years. On the team, he is now the fourth-highest paid forward on the team behind Victor Rask ($4 million), Jeff Skinner ($5.7 million), and Staal ($6 million)
