Report: Kyle Dubas Signs New Contract With Toronto Maple Leafs

According a new post by James Mirtle, Toronto Maple Leafs assistant general manager, Kyle Dubas has re-signed with the team. Earlier, Toronto gave the Colorado Avalance permission to speak with Dubas about a position in their front office. According to Elliotte Friedman, the window has closed for Colorado though. “I think it’s over,” he said.

Report: Kyle Dubas Signs New Contract With Toronto Maple Leafs

It’s actually not certain whether Dubas was able to interview with Colorado at all. Colorado has said that no talks were held with Dubas, although it’s unclear how true that is. Friedman stated that contact was made, and said there might have been part of Colorado that wasn’t aware of that.

It was also said that Toronto second guessed themselves about Dubas. “I believe that Toronto closed the window. Initially they were willing to let him go, and then they weren’t.”

While the terms of the contract haven’t been specified, Friedman has emphasized that some sort of deal was put in place. Colorado isn’t the only team who was interested in Dubas though. Being only 31-years-old, he’s one of the younger people in his position. He’s also commonly referred to as one of the best for his age. Because of that, he’s received interest from across the league. Along with Colorado, the Arizona Coyotes were a team that showed open interest in 2016.

Dubas has been with the club since July of 2014. He’s been the assistant general manager, but has also served as the general manager for Toronto’s AHL affiliate, the Marlies. In 2016, Dubas said he wanted to continue to grow with Toronto. He claimed he wanted to learn with them. It’s likely that same mentality is in play after their stunning 2016-17 season. On the back of an amazing rookie class, Toronto was able to grab hold of the second wild card spot in the East. They put up a tough fight in round one, but were trumped by the Washington Capitals.
